The 'Red Cap' is one of the strongest symbols against tyranny and oppression. One form or another of this cap has been around for hundreds of years. Originally called the 'Phrygian' cap, it was used by the liberated slaves in ancient Rome. The cap became popular again during the French Revolution and the 'Sons of Liberty', a radical Masonic group (responsible for the 'Boston Tea Party'), started the trend in the U.S. A Red Cap on a Pole symbolized freedom from slavery and dates back to the Roman Empire. This symbol has been and continues to be part of our heritage and can be seen today on many of the State Seals & Flags and on several coins including the Morgan Silver dollar and the rare 1793 Liberty Cent . |
