  • The French Masonic writer, Beranger wrote this about "Templar Masonry":

"The Order of Masonry was instituted by Godfrey de Bouillon, in Palestine, in 1330, after the defeat of the Christian armies, and was communicated only to a few French Masons, some time afterwards, as a reward for the services which they had rendered to the English and Scottish Knights.  From these latter true Masonry is derived.  Their Mother Lodge is situated on the mountain of Heredom, where the first Lodge in Europe was held, which still exists in all its splendor.  The Council General is always held here, and it is the seat of the Sovereign Grand Master for the time being.  This mountain is situated between the West and the North of Scotland, sixty miles from Edinburgh."

  • Another theory on the origins of Freemasonry comes from John Robinson's book, "Born In Blood - The Lost Secrets of Freemasonry".

The author purports to prove that Freemasonry is directly descended from the medieval monastic Knights Templar, and in the process to solve a number of minor mysteries concerning Masonic ritual, including the meanings and origins of words like cowan, cabletow and tyler, which occur in Masonic ritual and nowhere else in the English language.

  • According to another Masonic writer: "Of course all of the above is untrue.
It is indeed the purest nonsense."
  • ----
The true nature of the ancient Knights Templar may never be fully understood and the connection to Freemasonry will likely always remain unsubstantiated. The one certainty that came from all of this research: I now know that
"Sir Godfrey" was Godfrey de Bouillon.  Cool!
