While there is some question about the origin of the Fraternity's name, it is probably more than coincidence that its initials (A.A.O.N.M.S.), rearranged, spell out the words "A MASON". It is my understanding that the majority of Shrine temples were named for cities or places in North Africa. Today the Shriners membership is over 500,000 strong and their philanthropic energies are well documented. Their most widely known effort is the 'Shriners Hospitals for Children', a network of 22 hospitals that provide expert, no-cost orthopedic and burn care to children under 18. |
