Cyrus The Great
Born 580 BC - Died 529 BC

Cyrus the Great was the first Archaemenian king of Persia (now Iran).  He instituted the first declaration of human rights (a charter of the rights of nations), a replica of which is at the United Nations in new York, with the original in the British Museum.  He was known as a great leader of men, generous and benevolent.  In 539 BC he allowed more than 40,00 Jews to leave Babylon and return to Palestine.  Thus they regarded him as "the annointed of the Lord" because he decreed the original right of return for the Jewish people.
