James Whitcomb Riley  (1849-1916)
American Poet

America's Children's Poet and the poet of the Hoosier people wherever they may be around the world.

James Whitcomb Riley was a poet and humorist, known as the "Hoosier poet" because of his folksy, Indiana dialect and settings.  Under the name "Benj. F. Johnson of Boone" he began to write verse in the Hoosier dialect for the Indianapolis Journal in 1875.  Some of his best known works: The Old Swimmin'-Hole and Leven More Poems (1883), Rhymes of Childhood (1890) and Knee Deep in June (1912).

Riley was also famous as an entertainer and his performances with
"Bill" Nye made him a celebrity.
